Shibuya Honey Toast Recipe – Japanese Brick Toast

honey toast recipe

When I first heard the name Shibuya Honey Toast, I immediately thought of something that looked or tasted like French toast, but with maybe a cherry blossom, dragonfly or carp on them. However, what it is, is a far more delightful food that you eat like a dessert.

Shibuya Honey Toast - It's a delicious and attractive lighter dessert your friends and family will love.

Of course, you could eat it for breakfast, but you can also eat cold pizza and candy for breakfast, even though that’s not normally done. Japanese cuisine is known for the decorative presentation and Shibuya honey toast is no exception.

It’s a delightful way to make a simple dessert far more elegant. It’s also very yummy and that’s extremely important too.

How to Make this Honey Toast

You need to start with a loaf of uncut bread to make this dish. The magic of the dish is the carving of the bread and the re-assembly. It’s simple but still looks like a work of art.

You need a loaf of un-sliced bread that’s at least five inches long. Cut that in half, then make incisions across each side one inch from the center.

honey toast
In one side, preferably the one with the bottom crust, don’t go all the way through, but stop about an inch from the bottom.

In order to get the inside out of the other loaf, start at an inch from the bottom, slicing the bread horizontally one inch from each side, leaving the bottom on but allowing you to pull the square of bread from the center, leaving a square “container.”

honey toast

Cut the squares you cut from the bread into even smaller squares. Whisk together butter, sugar, and vanilla until mixed well and spread on all sides of the bread squares and the inside and top of the bread frames you created. Bake in a preheated 360-degree oven until golden brown.

This is a delicious and attractive lighter dessert your friends and family will love.

honey toast recipe

Ingredients

562.63 kcal
  1. 1/2 loaf of 5-inch thick unsliced sandwich bread (10 cm thick)
  2. 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened (76g)
  3. ¼ cup granulated sugar (50g; 4 tablespoons)
  4. 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  5. 2-3 strawberries and blackberries (or you can use sliced bananas)
  6. 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
  7. 2 wafer sticks for decoration (optional)

Instructions

    For the Bread Bricks:
  1. Slice 5-inch thick unsliced sandwich bread in half. Then cut out a square: make 2 incisions vertically on top and another 2 incisions horizontally.
  2. Make sure to leave about 1 inch from the edges and bottom of the bread.
  3. It should look like a container. Now set aside the cut bread and cut the rest into small cubes.
  4. For the other brick, just cut out a square leaving 1 inch from the edges. Now set aside the 2 bricks. And cut the rest into small cubes.
    For the Butter:
  1. In a mixing bowl of ⅓ cup of softened unsalted butter, add in ¼ cup of granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. And whisk until homogeneous.
  2. Spread the butter mixture inside of the bricks and also spread on all the small cubes.
    Now for the Baking Part:
  1. Preheat oven to 360 degrees F. (180C.), and put the bread for about 8 minutes, or until golden brown.
    Assemble and Garnish:
  1. Fill the inside of the brick with bottom using bread cubes and banana slices (you can add any fruit of your choice).
  2. Drizzle the honey on top. And place the hollow brick over the first brick, twisting slightly. And again fill it with bread cubes and fruit slices.
  3. Place 2-3 scoops of ice cream on top. And drizzle honey all over. And don’t forget to serve with a steak knife or a small bread knife.

No-Fry Fried Ice Cream Recipe

Going to the fair this summer and seeing the fried butter stand…..you read that right….FRIED BUTTER!…got my brain going in the direction of fried foods I really liked, like fried pickles and fried ice cream.

fried ice cream recipe
I had both at various places, mostly Asian restaurant, Chi-Chis and one little Mexican restaurant in Chicago, but never attempted making either, primarily because I don’t like to deep fry things because of the smell and mess it leaves and because it’s simply not easy and easy is my red flag to signal a recipe I want to make.

I decided to see if there was a way to make that bad boy without all the mess from the grease and sure enough if you look long enough, you’ll find what you want, no deep frying fried ice cream.

fried ice cream recipe

This recipe is so very easy, I’m almost tempted to serve it every night, but as usual, I told my family I slaved over it so they’d appreciate how special it was, which I did if you consider the thinking time that went into it.

I made a lot of the plain coated balls at one time, so I’m ready for action when the mood calls. Warning! You do have to get out the skillet once for this, but there’s absolutely no need for the deep fryer.

Don’t forget to stir these constantly or you’ll not get the desired results. I put that mixture in a shallow dish, rolled the ice cream in it and then pressed more on to the outside for good measure.

Just drizzle with chocolate syrup and top with whipped cream and a cherry and you have a dessert that is easy and costs pennies but looks expensive and time-consuming, my kind of dish.

Easy Homemade Brownie Bowl Ice Cream Sundae

Brownie Bowl Ice Cream Sundae

I am an ice cream fanatic. I love all types of ice cream, particularly one very expensive and sinfully delicious brand, no matter what the flavor. Just serving it makes the evening seem like a special day.

I found a way to make it a true celebration, regardless of the flavor of ice cream I use. Even the vanilla ice cream can be an event when I add it to a brownie bowl to make a sundae.

I like “The Tonight Dough” that has swirls of peanut butter cookie dough and chocolate chip dough, the favorite flavor of my family varies from cheesecake to chocolate chip mint.

Brownie Bowl Ice Cream Sundae - The only thing better than your favorite ice cream is the same ice cream served in a delicious edible brownie bowl or cup

Let’s face it, no matter what type of ice cream you buy, serving it in the brownie bowls topped with chocolate sauce, sprinkles and if you’d like whipped cream and nuts, will make it better.

brownie bowls
You can make your own special brownie recipe for this treat or even use a box mix. I have a recipe passed down by my aunt which is delectably rich and easy to make.

In fact, when you consider all the steps of a box mix, I’d say it’s just about the same when it comes to time spent in the kitchen and ease of making.

The only convenience I notice is that I don’t have to gather nearly as many ingredients for the box mixes. The key here is not in what you use to make the brownies but in the process, you use once they’re baked.

brownie bowls
brownie bowls

You bake your brownies in muffin tins that you’ve sprayed with cooking spray to prevent sticking, filling each tin almost two-thirds to the top.

Bake them as you normally would and while they’re baking, spray the OUTSIDE BOTTOM of another tin. I emphasize that so anyone who rushes through recipes, reading them as they go, as I sometimes do, doesn’t spray the inside of the second tin.

When the brownies are done, remove them from the oven and immediately push the second tin on top of the brownies, creating a bowl.

Allow the brownies to cool with the two together. The rest is simple. Add a scoop of ice cream in each brownie bowl chocolate sauce, a cherry if you’d like and sprinkles for a festive look.

Easy Oreo Cheesecake Cupcakes Recipe

Mini Oreo Cheesecake recipe

Easy Oreo Cheesecake Cupcakes – It doesn’t matter whether the weather is hot or cold, cheesecake is a dessert for all seasons and individual cheesecakes are the perfect food for a late night snack. You might think making serving size cheesecakes is a task beyond your capabilities, but you’ll be amazed at just how easy making these are, besides being incredibly yummy. You can make this one ahead and freeze it for up to two months.

I love eating them on a hot summer day right out of the freezer. Since I hate to turn on the oven in the summer, I generally bake them in the spring or on cooler rainy days in the summer and freeze several batches for the family, hiding a few for my private stash.

Oreo Cheesecake Cupcakes
The mini cheesecakes, which taste even better than the larger version of Cookies and Cream Cheesecake, use a whole Oreo for the bottom crust. I normally buy double the amount of Oreo than what is required for the recipe. That’s because I eat them while I’m baking and if I don’t bake the recipe immediately, my family snarfs quite a few down before I have a chance to create these sensations.

Oreo Cheesecake Cupcakes
oreo cheesecake recipe
The whole Oreo is the bottom of the mini cheesecake. The goodness doesn’t stop there. The creamy filling is oozing with crushed Oreos, so it has a double dose of goodness. Best of all, it’s so darned easy to make. You don’t have to have anything special like a springform. Instead, you simply use muffin tins and liners, the paper baking cups used for cupcakes.

how to make oreo cheesecake

Oreo Cheesecake Cupcakes
I love freezing these ahead and taking them out when I need a special dessert or a quick treat. The Oreo as the bottom crust and the creamy filling reminds me a bit of the ice cream sandwiches I always loved.

I served these as a dessert for brunch and made them look more festive by using decorative liners. You can find them in all types of designs. I got mine online by Googling muffin pan liners and found them at a craft store site that has a local brick and mortar store near me.

There were so many wonderful designs from which to choose that I couldn’t decide and bought several. These are inexpensive, so all those liners were less than $10. You can also get them in a variety of shapes, such as hearts, for special days. Guess what special treat my hubby is getting for Valentine’s Day!

Strawberry Nutella Cinnamon Roll French Toast Recipe

Cinnamon Roll French Toast – If your family is like mine, every once in a while we have breakfast for supper, such as omelets or a scramble.

However, even though French toast is often reserved for breakfast, this isn’t a meal but a decadent dessert that you can also use to start your day or be the main attraction at a brunch.

In fact, it is an easy-to-make dish for a shower or just a family get-together that will have everyone, regardless of age, coming back for more.

cinnamon french toast recipe

Since simple is always the goal in my kitchen, these are the perfect dish. In case you’re not familiar with the acronym KISS, it stands for “keep it simple, stupid” and was part of my training in my previous life.

If you’ve never had Nutella, it’s a combination hazelnut-chocolate spread with the consistency of peanut butter. You can try substituting a variety of different ingredients for the Nutella, such as cream cheese, but the nutty chocolaty goodness of the Nutella enhances the flavor of the strawberries.

If you want to get a bit fancy, you can try this Shibuya Honey Toast recipe that will blow your mind. It’s a delightful way to make a simple dessert far more elegant. It’s also very yummy and that’s extremely important too.

cinnamon french toast recipe

cinnamon french toast recipe

There are two keys to making this recipe and both are easy.

The first is to cut the edges off the bread and roll it flat with a rolling pin.

The second is to spread the bread with the Nutella, adding the strawberries (or any of your favorite fruits) and rolling it before you dip it in the egg/milk mixture and cook it.

The Nutella seals the roll up so there’s no need for toothpicks while you cook. When you’re finished, roll it in the cinnamon sugar mixture for the final step.

The entire process takes only about ten minutes but the finished product looks like it took you hours and tastes so divine everyone will want more.

You can make the roll ups the night before, but don’t dip them in egg mixture until you’re ready to cook and serve the roll ups.

It takes about four minutes to cook on each side when the roll ups are at room temperature and a job you can do yourself at a party or assign to a helper.

Easy Chocolate Molten Lava Cake

Molten Chocolate Lava Cake Recipe

I’m a bit of a late bloomer to cooking. When I was younger and newly married, I collected cookbooks, thinking perhaps I would learn epicurean magic by osmosis.

Molten Chocolate Lava Cake Recipe
Molten Chocolate Lava Cake

People who tasted my cooking often added to my cookbook collection, hoping it would.

As a wedding gift, a friend bought me a set of ramekins. I had no idea what these were and thought they were perhaps very small soup bowls, but eventually used one of them as a food dish for a new kitten.

These sturdy and tiny bowls were thoroughly washed and packed away when we moved until my recent discovery that the kitchen could be a happy area where I could flex my creative muscles.

We had all gone to a restaurant to celebrate a special birthday of a friend. When it came time for the birthday song, we each got an individual molten lava cake as requested by the birthday girl.

OMG, too delicious! It was melt-in-your-mouth heaven. I knew I had to learn how to make this delectable divinely decadent dessert.

While scrolling through all the choices for recipes, I found a video, while I never used the recipe in this video, I did learn an important fact from it….those little dishes called ramekins are used for souffles, and other individual serving portion dishes….including this elegant and rich dessert.

This may be common knowledge for others, but none of the creations I made ever used them, so it was a learning experience for me.

I quickly went through the boxes that remained packed and stored in the basement and retrieved those dishes.

Molten Chocolate Lava Cake Recipe
How to Create the Molten Chocolate Lava Cake

I didn’t deviate from the recipe I found and had great success the first time out. The inside of the molten cake was thick and gooey, with the outside the perfect blend of just the right amount of soft, brownie-like cake.

While some people serve it with chocolate sauce and whipped cream, I like to drizzle just a hint of caramel, a dopple of whipped cream and a generous sprinkling of pecans….because everything is better with pecans (I didn’t take the picture of my lava cake with pecans).

Molten Chocolate Lava Cake Recipe

The beauty of this delicious cake is that you can “make it your own” easily by creatively topping it with your special extras like fresh strawberries and whipped cream.

Better Than Sex Cake Recipe

How to Make Chocolate Cake at Home

Seldom do I run across a dessert with a name that’s X-rated and one that lives up to that less-than-polite name. This cake was definitely not a disappointment and deserves the name that professes it’s better than sex.

how to make chocolate cake at home

I’ve served it many parties and even the men agreed that this one, if not better than sex, ranks right up there in the pleasure it brings. Best of all, it’s not hard to make and uses very few ingredients that don’t require any special preparations.

If you love to cook from scratch, you won’t love this cake. It starts with a store bought cake box mix.

However, you can change the recipe to suit your taste and make a chocolate cake from start to finish, without ever opening a box. You need sweetened condensed milk, cool whip, pecans and toffee bits.

I know you can buy them, but instead I just bought three Health bars, put them in a paper sack, in the wrapper, and hit them with a hammer to crush them. It added some extra chocolate to the cake, but extra chocolate is never a problem.

Super Moist Poke Chocolate Cake

Don’t worry if you’re not an ace in the kitchen, as long as you make a box cake mix, poke holes in that cake with your fingers and pour on the condensed milk and pile on the rest of the toppings, you’ll look like the best cook in the world when your company tastes just how delicious this cake is.

I started by making a test cake for may family and it disappeared quickly that night, with everyone quietly sneaking to the refrigerator to get a sliver, second small piece and sometimes and throwing away all bits of self-consciousness and cutting a big hunk.

Scrumptious Chocolate Poke Cake

After serving this quick to make cake that took only about fifteen minutes plus baking time at my last get together, I gave the recipe to many of my friends, some of whom asked to take home any leftovers if there were any, which there weren’t.

One of my friends told me her eight year old loved it so much she asked to have it as a birthday cake. My friend changed the name to the Better than Summer Break Cake for that party.

Cinnamon French Toast Casserole for Your Next Brunch

I fell in love with breakfast casseroles many years ago when I had a Saturday morning business appointment in the other party’s home. Rather than just serving coffee, this person went out of their way to make me feel welcome by serving a cheesy bacon and egg casserole.

Not only was the gesture extremely nice, even though it wasn’t necessary, but the casserole was also delicious and opened my mind to a wider variety of menus for breakfast, particularly when serving a group.

The French toast casserole is no different. It’s easy and serves a group and a bit different than many of the other breakfast casseroles I often serve.

You won’t need syrup for this French toast since you create a sauce for the bottom that will provide plenty of sweet goodness. There’s also no dipping bread in egg mixture since you pour it over the bread.

It’s simple and easy, but best of all, you make it the night before and have it ready to bake in the refrigerator the next morning, making it easy when you least want to rush.

For the syrupy bottom layer, combine a stick of melted butter with a cup of brown sugar, mixing it well. Pour it in the bottom of a 9X13 pan and then layer it with Texas toast, which you can find in your freezer section.

Put them close together so you don’t have any gaps. You can leave the crusts on the toast or remove them for a more attractive appearance. I leave them on for the family, but remove them when guests are going to be partaking. Sprinkle with a cinnamon and sugar mixture.

Mix four beaten eggs, 1 ½ cups of milk, a tablespoon of powdered sugar and a teaspoon of vanilla until blended. Pour half of the mixture over the Texas toast. Top with another layer of Texas toast and top off with the remaining mixture and then sprinkle more cinnamon and sugar on top.

You can use brown or white sugar for this. Let it set in the refrigerator overnight. When you’re ready for it in the morning, all you have to do is bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes then sprinkle with powdered sugar for a finishing touch.

If you want to make it a holiday special, cut a stencil with a holiday pattern out and sprinkle the sugar over it to create a design on the top of the casserole.
