Say hello to your new favorite way to cook tofu! Our air fryer tofu guide has all the tips for crispy, flavorful results.
Ingredients Breakdown:

Ingredients (for Air Fryer Tofu)

1 Block Extra Firm Tofu. ⇢ We're going extra firm here! It holds its shape beautifully in the air fryer and has that satisfying bite without being mushy. Vacuum-packed bonus: Score! This means it's already got minimal moisture, saving you the pressing step. Time-saver for those busy weeknights!

Cornstarch. ⇢ The secret weapon for crispy tofu. As it cooks, it creates a light, golden crust that's seriously addictive.

Nutritional Yeast . ⇢ Trust me, if you haven't tried “nooch” yet, this is your moment. It adds a savory, cheesy flavor that pairs perfectly with tofu.

Soy Sauce. ⇢ This brings that classic umami goodness, giving a depth of flavor to your tofu.

Olive oil. ⇢ Helps the batter stick to the tofu and adds to that crispy exterior. Choose an oil with a high smoke point for the best results.

Coarse Salt. ⇢ Just a touch of salt enhances all the other flavors.

Spice Blend. ⇢ This is where you get to play! Pick your favorite spice mix for customized flavor – taco seasoning, Italian herbs, Cajun spice...the options are endless.

Remember, these are just the basics! ⇢ Feel free to experiment with different flavors and ingredients. Want a kick? Add some chili powder or a splash of hot sauce! The possibilities are endless.

Air Fryer Tofu (Step by Step)

1

Whip Up Your Flavor Bomb Batter.
In a bowl, whisk together cornstarch, nutritional yeast, soy sauce, oil, and two teaspoons of the spice mix. Boom—instant flavor bomb batter.

2

Embrace the Imperfect Chunks.
Ditch the perfect cubes – we want texture! Rip your tofu into bite-sized chunks. Those craggy edges will get gloriously crispy in the air fryer. Now, toss those tofu chunks into your batter and gently stir until they're all coated.

3

Get that Crispy Goodness.
Preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees F. Carefully spread your battered tofu in the basket – don't overcrowd it! Let it cook for 8-10 minutes, then give the basket a good shake. Pop it back in for another 5 minutes, or until your tofu reaches that perfect golden brown.

Pro Tip: Every air fryer is a little different, so keep an eye on your tofu! Adjust cooking times if needed to get that ideal crispy texture.

Okay, now for the fun part – SAUCE!
The possibilities are endless! Add these tofu bites to a flavorful curry, toss them into a veggie-packed stir-fry, or build an epic rice bowl. Want to keep it simple? Grab your favorite dipping sauce and snack away!(But seriously, try them dipped in Chipotle Tahini sauce...trust me.)

Notes:

#1.) Tofu Lowdown

Did you know there's a shortcut to perfectly crispy tofu? Look for vacuum-sealed extra-firm tofu! This stuff is already drier, saving you the pressing step. Score!
Can't find it? No worries! Regular extra-firm tofu works too. Just give it a quick squeeze! Here's how:
  1. Slice your tofu block into 2 slabs.
  2. Layer between paper towels (top and bottom).
  3. Pop a heavy pan on top for a few minutes to soak up extra moisture.
Pro-Tip: This tofu might crumble a bit more when you toss it in the batter. No sweat! Use a wide spatula and a few gentle turns in the bowl. Some crumbles are totally fine – they'll get extra crispy and delicious, I promise!

#2. Spice Mix recipe

Don't have a go-to spice blend? No sweat! Here's a DIY mix that works wonders with tofu:
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried leaf oregano
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
Feeling Adventurous? Tweak it to your liking! Add a pinch of chili powder for heat, or a sprinkle of dried herbs.
Salt Check: If your spice blend doesn't already have salt, add a pinch to the batter for extra flavor oomph.

What if I don't have nutritional yeast?

You can absolutely rock this recipe without nutritional yeast! But here's what you need to know:

  • The No-Yeast Version: Your tofu might have a slightly more uneven coating, giving it a more rustic appearance.
  • Team "Nooch" (that's nutritional yeast for the uninitiated 😉) This is where you get that super crispy, golden exterior and a boost of savory, slightly cheesy flavor.

The Verdict: Both options are delicious! If you have nutritional yeast on hand, I say go for it – it adds a wonderful flavor and texture. No yeast? No problem! Your tofu will still be tasty.

Troubleshooting Common Tofu Mistakes

1 Your Air Fryer Tofu Isn't Crispy Enough:

  • Moisture is the Enemy: Did you press your tofu (if not using vacuum-sealed)? Excess moisture can lead to softer tofu. Give it a quick squeeze before cooking or opt for vacuum-sealed varieties.
  • Check the Temp: Is your air fryer hot enough? 375-400°F is the typical range for crispy results.
  • Don't Overcrowd: Give those tofu pieces room to breathe in the basket. Overcrowding = steaming, not crisping.

2 Your Air Fryer Tofu is Too Dry

  • Marinades to the Rescue: Marinating your tofu infuses it with flavor and moisture. Even a quick 15-minute soak helps!
  • Oil Is Your Friend: Did you skimp on the oil? A light coating before air frying helps prevent dryness.
  • Cooking Time Check: Overcooked tofu gets dry. Start with the lower end of the cooking time range and adjust based on your air fryer.

3 Your Air Fryer Tofu is Bland

  • Spice It Up: Go beyond salt and pepper! Experiment with spice mixes, flavored oils, and your favorite sauces.
  • Batter Boost: A pinch of spices in your batter adds an extra layer of deliciousness.
  • The Saucy Solution: Toss your finished tofu in a flavorful sauce for a flavor explosion.
